Danielle Collins was unable to play last year due to endometriosis. The 28-year-old, on the other hand, stunned everyone by reaching the Australian Open women’s singles final in January 2022.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, endometriosis is a benign growth that develops on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other areas of the lower abdomen or pelvis when tissue similar to the uterus lining grows outside of the womb.
Last year at the Australian Open, she experienced “contraction-like cramps” in her low pelvis and abdominal muscles, causing her to trip and fall to the ground. A doctor was called in to assist her.
She had emergency surgery in April 2021 for the ailment after years of agonizing pain.
I had so many doctors tell me that painful periods were normal, she explained to the Women’s Tennis Association. The situation deteriorated further.
During the procedure, four separate cuts were made to her abdominal wall. According to Collins, her ovary underwent surgery to remove a “tennis ball-sized cyst” that was pressing on a spinal nerve and pushing her uterus out of place.
