She assists them in determining the underlying reasons behind their disagreements and coming up with workable ways to improve their communication.
The couples that participate in each season have kept viewers interested in following their progress since the show’s September 2019 premiere. One such unique couple that was showered with affection by all is Elaine and DeSean, who visited Dr. Guralnik during season 1.
Here is all the information we have to offer you if you’re interested in learning how they’re both doing right now.
The Couples Therapy Journey of Elaine and DeSean
Elaine and DeSean, who have been married for eleven years, told Dr. Guralnik that they are complete opposites who fell in love. According to Elaine, she woke her husband awake while he soothed her nose.
But after spending so much time together, they started to feel misinterpreted by one another and found it difficult to express their needs. Not only that, but DeSean claimed that Elaine would yell at him for any tiny thing because he felt repressed by her rage.
Conversely, she expressed that she felt disregarded by him and that he put work ahead of her wish to spend more time with him.
When Elaine informed Dr. Guralnik that DeSean would not answer her phone at work, he replied that she frequently called him nonstop—roughly twenty times a day. He went on to say that when he did not return her calls, Elaine would become quite agitated and confront him.
Furthermore, DeSean claimed that regardless of his attempts, she would be dissatisfied and point out his errors. Over the course of the following few sessions, Elaine received assistance from Dr. Guralnik in realizing that the causes of her severe fear and distrust of her marriage sprang from her history.
Before she met DeSean, Elaine had a very violent partner, and the pain from that relationship permeated their union. Furthermore, the latter expressed how his wife didn’t get his worries and negative experiences as a person of race.
When they went to upscale restaurants together, DeSean occasionally felt intimidated by his surroundings and subjected to prejudice because he is African American. Elaine dismissed it as his lack of confidence, but Dr. Guralnik told her that in order for him to feel safe, it was crucial to give voice to his emotions.
Elaine and DeSean knew as their sessions drew to an end that in order for them to go forward as a couple, they had to overcome their prior hurts and fears. She realized that in order to move past her painful past and into a safe present, she needed to learn to trust her husband.
DeSean also acknowledged that he needed to express his wants more clearly and be more sensitive to Elaine’s sentiments. The couple came to the conclusion that their time spent with Dr. Guralnik had improved their bond and strengthened their ability to work together in the face of adversity.
Do Elaine and Sean Still Have a Relationship?
Elaine and DeSean had shared their tale with the world, but they had asked for some anonymity when they appeared on “Couples Therapy.” We haven’t disclosed any information regarding their past since we respect their request.
In addition, they don’t appear to be active on social media and seem to prefer living in the background. As of December 2020, when they were last seen on “The COVID Special” episode of the show, they were still active.
The couple had moved to Florida, as was disclosed on the episode, and Elaine was having some trust issues. Elaine informed Dr. Guralnik said via video conference that she was offended by certain texts her husband had purportedly written to a lady.
Furthermore, a wave of panic surrounding the prevalence of hate crimes engulfed the African American community after George Floyd’s murder in May 2020.
DeSean had also been profoundly affected by the socio-political climate, and he had lost confidence in confiding in others about his emotions. According to Elaine and DeSean’s story on the episode, the couple’s resolve to keep their marriage intact goes far beyond their problems. We can only hope that they have resolved their differences and are still happy together.
