The youngest person to be tried and found guilty of first-degree murder was 14-year-old Caril in 1958.

Caril was detained for aiding Charles Starkweather, her ex-boyfriend, in his murderous rampage. Charles, who was 19 at the time they dated, said that Caril assisted him in murdering a number of his victims.

The pair was hurt in a single-vehicle collision on a Michigan highway in 2013. Frederick passed away at the scene, but Caril was in critical condition. Age-wise, he was 81.

The Detroit News then reported in February 2020 that Caril had applied for a pardon from the Nebraska Board of Pardons in order to clear her name of the 1958 crimes.

She claimed that even though she had been out of prison for decades by the time, her life had been entirely upstaged by being wrongly convicted of the murders.

Caril stated in her 2020 plea for pardon, “The concept that posterity has been forced to believe that I (willingly engaged in) a murder spree is too much for me to stomach. “Getting a pardon might help to lessen this horrible load,”

Although Caril’s pardon had the support of a number of the murder victims’ relatives, it was not enough to win approval.

Clair’s request was “far, much broader” than what the pardons board members could provide,” according to NBC News, which explains why her pardon was rejected.
