William Stanley Milligan, also known as The Campus Rapist (February 14, 1955 – December 12, 2014), was an American who was the subject of a highly publicised court case in Ohio in the late 1970s. After committing multiple felonies, including armed robbery.

He was arrested on the Ohio State University campus for three rapes. Psychologists diagnosed Milligan with dissociative identity disorder as he prepared his defence. His attorneys pleaded insanity, asserting that two of Milligan’s alternate personalities committed the crimes without his knowledge.

Where is Billy Milligan Now?

Milligan passed away in 2014 at the age of 59 due to cancer. After his release in 1988, Milligan lived in Los Angeles and Las Vegas for several years before returning to Columbus, Ohio. His sister had bought him a mobile home, in which he spent the remainder of his life painting.

When Did He Get Arrested?

Milligan was incarcerated at Lebanon Correctional Institution in Ohio in 1975 for aggravated robbery and aggravated rape. In 1977, he was released on parole. Milligan was arrested in October 1977 for raping three women on the Ohio State University campus.

One of his victims identified him using existing police mugshots of sex offenders and fingerprints taken from the vehicle of another victim. Since he used a firearm during the crime and firearms were discovered during a search of his residence, he had also violated the terms of his parole.

He was placed in the Ohio State Penitentiary pending trial on three counts of kidnapping, three counts of aggravated robbery, and four counts of rape.

In preparation for his defence, Dr Willis C. Driscoll conducted a psychological evaluation and diagnosed Milligan with acute schizophrenia. Dorothy Turner, a psychologist at the Southwest Community Mental Health Center in Columbus, Ohio, then examined him.

Turner determined during this examination that Milligan had dissociative identity disorder. Gary Schweickart and Judy Stevenson, Milligan’s public defenders, argued insanity. He was committed “until such time as he regains sanity.”

Dr David Caul treated him at the Athens Mental Hospital in Athens, Ohio, where he was admitted in December 1978. Billy was released after spending a decade in various mental health hospitals within the Ohio mental health system.
