Villarreal blocked Real Madrid
Real Madrid started the match with a good news. Real had no chance of losing the top spot in the league this week after losing to Atletico Madrid earlier in the day. Maybe that’s why coach Carlo Ancelotti has gone through a lot of testing today.
He did not bring good results in the test. Real, who scored 21 goals in the first 6 matches, did not get any goal at home today. Real Madrid left the field with a goalless draw with Villarreal.
Right back Dani Carvajal was injured in the previous match. His place was taken by Lucas Vasquez or Nacho. But Ancelotti didn’t do that and dropped midfielder Fede Valverde as a rightback. Zidane did the same thing last season without seeing the way. Real passed the test against Liverpool.
But today another decision by Ancelotti proved this decision wrong. On the one hand, Valverde is playing as a rightback, on the other hand, Luka Madrich, Casimiro and Marco Asensio have played in midfield. Asensio had scored a hat-trick in the midfield in the previous match.
But on that day, Valvarde and Kamavinga were by his side. With two midfielders of much older age on the sidelines today, Asensio was repeatedly getting up, creating a vacuum in the middle. And he was dominating the opportunity.
That also affected the attack. Real attacked more, took more shots, but not a single shot in the goal. Meanwhile, Thibaut Courtois has twice taken the big test.
At the beginning of the second half, Ancelotti picked up Rodrigo and dropped Kamavinga. Real regained control of midfield and attack. But the protection gap created by the patchwork could not be covered. The visitors wasted two golden chances to advance in 54 to 56 minutes.
Ancelotti dropped Eden Hazard in the 62nd minute. Then the ball just revolved around the Villarreal D-box. But no team got the goal.
