Kirstie Alley was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1951 to Lillian and Robert, who owned a lumber company. Brother Craig and sister Colette are her siblings. She attended Wichita Southeast High School as a teen. After graduating in 1969, she attended Kansas State University for two years before dropping out.

She moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue Scientology and work in interior design. While in Los Angeles, Alley appeared on the game shows “Match Game” and “Password Plus,” where she won both rounds. Her mother was killed in a car accident involving an intoxicated driver in 1981, while her father was severely injured.

Career

Alley made her film debut in 1982 with “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.” Alley starred in a number of smaller films in the years that followed, including ‘One More Chance,’ ‘Blind Date,’ and ‘Runaway.’

In 1987, she co-starred with Mark Harmon in the comedy film “Summer School.” The film was a box office success in the United States, grossing over $35 million.

She joined the cast of the NBC sitcom ‘Cheers’ later that year. Alley has been awarded two Emmys.
