Four days later, on April 5, it was announced that Davis would be the program’s 19th head coach and the first African-American to do so. Even though Davis had never been in charge of a team at any level, Williams was preparing him for that role in the same way that Dean Smith had helped Williams when Williams was an assistant coach at UNC from 1978 to 1988.
