Hubert Ira Davis Jr. is the head coach of the men’s North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. He played professional basketball in the United States. Davis played basketball for North Carolina from 1988 to 1992. From 1992 to 2004, he played for the New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, and New Jersey Nets in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
He is the nephew of Walter Davis, who also played for the North Carolina Tar Heels and the NBA. Davis was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels from 2012 until 2021 when Roy Williams stepped down and Davis took over as head coach.

In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals between the Knicks and the Chicago Bulls in 1994, he made the winning free throws after Hue Hollins called a disputed foul on Scottie Pippen. This gave the Knicks an 87–86 win (the Knicks went on to win the series in seven games).
Before the 2012–2013 season, Roy Williams, who was the head coach at UNC, hired Davis as an assistant. Davis was also the head coach of UNC’s junior varsity basketball team, which is one of the only junior varsity teams left in college basketball. Roy Williams’ 18 years as head coach of UNC will end on April 1, 2021. Four days later, on April 5, it was announced that Davis would be the program’s 19th head coach and the first African-American to do so. Even though Davis had never been in charge of a team at any level, Williams was preparing him for that role in the same way that Dean Smith had helped Williams when Williams was an assistant coach at UNC from 1978 to 1988.
