Behind the Scenes: Nicolas Cage’s ‘Longlegs’ Performance Rooted in Personal History

On Friday, the Oscar winner disclosed that he did not prepare himself to perform the role of a lethal occultist in the film “Longlegs,” However, he took inspiration from his mother. Until the death of his mother in 2021, she lived with schizophrenia and severe depression.

He provides information to the sources that, “My mom put on Noxzema cold cream. I was 2 years old, and I opened the bathroom door [to see] what she was doing. For no reason, she turned her face really fast and stared at me after [putting on] the cold cream.”
He added, “The whiteness of the cold cream just really spooked me.”
Meanwhile, the fourth film from writer-director Oz Perkins, “Longlegs” highlighted various old unsolved murders that resurfaced in the 1990s. In the film, it is talked about when FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is tasked to nab the elusive killer. Additionally, the killer’s white complexion is the stuff of nightmares.

Cage told Entertainment Weekly regarding finding his character alongside Perkins, “He has a strange connection to the color white. I don’t really know what it is. He says it’s just a force he’s aware of. You don’t question it too much. He knows it when he sees it.”
The promotional materials for the movie still feature Cage’s original look. Meanwhile, a widely shared video of Harker and Longlegs’ initial meeting includes audio of Monroe’s actual heart rate, which spiked when she saw Longlegs’ face.
In a previous interview with EW, Cage described his character as “a tragic entity… at the mercy of these voices that are talking to him.” It has been reported that his mother, Joy Vogelsang, faced similar issues throughout most of his childhood, undergoing shock treatments and being institutionalized multiple times.
In June, Cage said, “I was coming at it from, what exactly was it that drove my mother insane? It was a deeply personal kind of performance for me because I grew up trying to cope with what she was going through. She would talk in terms that were kind of poetry.”
Recently, he indicated her fear of being controlled by the burgeoning use of artificial intelligence, letting Hollywood inhabit his likeness with ease.
