Anne Hathaway Gives a Nod to Kelly Clarkson in Special 20th Anniversary Tribute for ‘Princess Diaries 2’
Two decades after the film’s debut, Anne Hathaway is honoring Kelly Clarkson and the Princess Diaries 2.
“Happy 20th anniversary to @kellyclarkson’s Breakaway and #PrincessDiaries2!” The 41-year-old Hathaway posted on Instagram on Wednesday, August 7. A snippet of the music video for Clarkson’s popular song, which was included on the movie’s soundtrack, was posted alongside the post.
At the international premiere of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Clarkson exits a limo and poses for photographers on the red carpet. After that, she enters a cinema to attend the movie. Later, after a bumpy flight, she rewatches the coming-of-age movie.
In the post’s comments area, the official Instagram account for Kelly Clarkson’s talk show said, “QUEENS.”
Hathaway also posted a number of old photos from her time spent filming the follow-up, including backstage photos with Julie Andrews, Chris Pine, and director Gary Marshall, who passed away in 2016 following a pneumonia battle.
Three years after the original Princess Diaries debuted in theaters, the sequel followed in 2001.
In the franchise, Hathaway plays Mia Thermapolis, an unpopular high school student who learns from her grandmother Queen Clarisse (Andrews) that she is the Princess of Genovia. The second movie chronicles Mia’s ascension to the throne.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed in November 2022, following years of speculation of a third installment, that Disney was indeed producing a new film. Hathaway stated to Entertainment Tonight a month ago that she was “pulling” for a Princess Diaries 3.
At the time, Hathaway told the outlet, “I think we could make it work if Julie Andrews could get involved.” “We would simply set up a green screen behind her and go to where she was.”
Hathaway’s two on-screen romantic interests have both indicated that they would like to come back. Pine stated to ET in March 2023 that he was “here for” playing Nicolas Deveraux again, and Variety in September 2022 stated that Robert Schwartzman—who portrayed Michael Moscovitz in the first movie—would “of course” return.
But over time, Andrews has wavered in his support for a third movie. She expressed her happiness to work on another film in March 2024, but added that she “doesn’t like when people milk and milk and milk the subject ’til it’s dead.”
She went on, “I’m sure there will be another version on another day.” “I don’t know, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. It’s been a long time since the two Diaries were finished.”
