Woodrow “Woody” Tracy Harrelson is an actor, comedian, and writer from Texas who is from the United States. The movies “White Men Can’t Jump,” “Natural Born Killers,” “Zombieland,” “The Hunger Games,” and “Now You See Me” made Harrelson famous.
Early Life
Woody Harrelson was born on July 23, 1961, in Midland, Texas. His full name is Woodrow Tracy Harrelson. His mother was a secretary. Her name was Diane. Charles, his father, was a hitman.
In 1964, his parents split up. After spending five years in jail for killing a grain dealer, Charles was found guilty of killing a federal judge in 1979 and given two life sentences. In 2007, Charles died in jail of a heart attack.
Woody had two brothers and sisters, Jordan and Brett when he was growing up. He said that his family was poor, but there was always food on the table. In 1973, they moved to Diane’s hometown of Lebanon, Ohio.
Woody went to Lebanon High School and finished in 1979. After graduating from high school, he worked at Kings Island amusement park for the summer. He then went to Hanover, Indiana, to go to Hanover College, which was a Presbyterian college at the time.
Woody joined the Sigma Chi fraternity when he was in college. He finished in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts in theater and English.
Television Career
Harrelson made his first appearance on TV when he joined “Cheers” in its fourth season. From 1985 to 1993, he was in 196 shows. He was nominated for 5 Primetime Emmys and won one in 1989. Woody Boyd, the character he played, also showed up on “The Simpsons” in 1994 and “Frasier” in 1999.
Harrelson played Grace’s boyfriend on 7 episodes of “Will & Grace” in 2001, and he was the main character in HBO’s “True Detective” in 2014. Woody and Matthew McConaughey, who he worked with on True Detective, were also Executive Producers for the show and its sequels.
Woody has also been on “Dear John” and “Spin City.” In the 2012 HBO movie “Game Change,” he played Republican adviser Steve Schmidt. Harrelson hosted “Saturday Night Live” in 1989, 1992, 2014, and 2019. He also made special appearances as Joe Biden in 2019 shows hosted by Will Ferrell and David Harbour.
Theatre Career
From 1985 to 1986, Harrelson was a substitute in “Biloxi Blues” at the Neil Simon Theatre. From 1987 to 1988, he played Jack in “The Boys Next Door” at the Lamb’s Theatre.
He also played Bill Starbuck in “The Rainmaker” at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre from 1999 to 2000 and Shannon in “Night of the Iguana” at the Lyric Theatre from 2005 to 2006.
In 1999, Woody directed the play “Farthest from the Sun” at the Theatre de la Jeune Lune in Minneapolis. He also directed his play “Bullet for Adolf” at Toronto’s Hart House Theatre for two weeks in 2011 and at Off-Broadway’s New World Stages from July to September 2012.
