The origins of the Caribou Man are left vague in Sweet Tooth season 3, but there are enough hints left for viewers to figure out who he is and how he came to be.
The third season of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, which was created by Jim Mickle, brings back nearly every character that starred in the first two seasons. Some, like Jepperd, Gus, Wendy, and Bear, once more take center stage in the plot of Sweet Tooth season 2, while others, like Rani and Abbot, do not make a comeback in the finale due to their tragic outcomes.

Who is the Caribou Man?
Gus is portrayed as the original hybrid by both the show’s characters and fans throughout Sweet Tooth seasons 1 and 2. But season three ultimately reveals that the Caribou Man, whose true name is Munaqsriri, was the first half-animal, half-human hybrid to be created long before Gus.
According to James Thacker’s account in Sweet Tooth, he discovered a cave with an enigmatic antler tree when visiting Alaska in 1911. Thacker, who was blinded by his search for the fountain of youth, used an axe to cut down the tree and took “The Blood of the Earth” from its trunk because he thought it would heal all ailments.
The hybrids and the spread of The Sick were brought about by damaging the tree and unleashing its sap into the world. However, Thacker’s men murdered themselves in Alaska after seeing how The Sick would destroy humanity, and by stopping Thacker from departing, they stopped The Sick from spreading.
However, a member from Thacker’s crew named Nathaniel Burke impregnated a native lady named Ikiaq prior to their sad ends. The mother gave birth to the first hybrid, Munaq, before she died, but she too perished shortly after the males.
Munaq’s appearance led to him being dubbed “The Caribou Man.” Gillian Washington followed in Thacker’s footsteps and sought a treatment for every disease more than a century after Munaq was born and Thacker passed away.
The Sick spread over the world because she, too, discovered “The Blood of the Earth” and brought it back to the United States. All other hybrids appeared after The Sick infected the people, but Gus was produced in a lab.
How Old is Munaq and How Long Has He Lived?
Munaq was born in 1911, and he spent more than a century in Sweet Tooth before passing away from the wounds the Wolf lads had inflicted. After his mother died, Munaq remembers, he found it difficult to live with people since they always treated him like an animal.
He relocated to an abandoned church close to the cave after losing confidence in people, and he lived out the remainder of his days defending it.
The hybrids’ distinct genetic composition appears to give them a longer lifetime than other humans, though Sweet Tooth season 3 does not specifically address how he managed to survive for so long.
The Caribou Man’s Purpose in Sweet Tooth
Gus is compared to the Caribou Man, who makes him wonder if people are really deserving of being saved. Munaq makes the case that Earth would be a better place without people by sharing his awful encounters with them.
Gus, however, disagrees with Munaq since he has witnessed the generosity of people like Birdie, Pubba, and Big Man. Much later in the season, when Gus witnesses what people like Zhang are capable of, he remembers Munaq’s remarks about humanity and their cruelty.
Gus is fortunate to witness the finest of humanity when Dr. Aditya, Birdie, and Jepperd risk their lives to keep him safe.

Gus most likely would have spent the remainder of his life like the Caribou Man if it weren’t for these devoted people. But unlike Munaq, who becomes bitter toward humanity, the elder Gus never forgets how Big Man Jepperd treated him, as demonstrated at the conclusion of Sweet Tooth season 3.
