The popular character Monse Finnie from Netflix’s On My Block was not one to back down from a battle. Protecting her three closest pals closely, she watched for any suspicious outsiders. Monse’s devoted father, who had abandoned up on locating Monse’s biological mother, was her homemaker.
Finnie’s mother would appear in season two with two white children and a new husband. Now living in the wealthy and white enclave of Brentwood, Julia Whitman left Finnie and her father, Monty, when Monse was three years old.
The majority of fans wanted to see Monse, a young woman in need of a strong female role model, and Julia, the guardian angel who was sent to save Monse from the perils of Freeridge, together again. Sadly, there was never any relationship between the two.
Monse’s Mother Died by Suicide After Monse Rejected Her Bond
Julia quickly realized that the young woman watching her was actually her daughter, Monse. As Finnie adapted to Whitman’s life, she intended to conceal who she was.
Julia said that she changed her name to Selena Finnie, and the two acknowledged each other. She had come back to write a memoir on her previous life with her spouse and two children. Monse declines Julia’s offer to go to Brentwood with her because everyone and everything she values is in Freeridge.
Is she willing to sacrifice everything for a relationship with her mother? Unfortunately, Whitman’s deception ends her relationship with Monse before it really begins. Julie told her Brentwood friends that she left Monty and Finnie behind because Monty mistreated her, Finnie finds out.
Julia didn’t want to seem bad for leaving her daughter behind, so she lied to preserve her reputation with her wealthy white acquaintances. In addition to being enraged by Whitman’s deception, Monse believes Julia is uneasy about having a black child.
Thus, Monse bids her biological mother farewell. But Julia is determined to revive their nascent romance, so she keeps calling Monse. Cesar’s brother Spooky advises Monse to disregard her mother. He informs her:
She simply wants to have her mind straightened up. She vanishes, then reappears, and you expect to embrace her? She wants to have children now? When you don’t have to raise a child, it seems so much easier. Ignore that.
Finnie finds out that Julia killed herself in the upcoming episode. Whitman’s husband tells Monse at the funeral that although Julia had occasionally left the family, she had always returned, resolved not to make the same mistake twice.
Monse and I have more questions than answers after Julia’s suicide. Did she regret leaving Monse all those years ago and end her life? Or was the suicide motivated by something else? We’ll never know, unfortunately.
Sierra Capri Used Her Bond With Her Dad to Show Monse and Julia’s Strained Relationship
When Monse learns that her mother resides in Brentwood, the show puts her into a tailspin. With “one half of her in Brentwood and the other half in Freeridge,” she experiences an identity dilemma.
Initially, Monse wants to establish a bond with her mother. Sierra Capri discussed her character’s predicament with Vulture:
Naturally, her initial thought was, “I just want this to work, and I want my mother to like and love me.” since she has never experienced a significant female influence in her life. Males have always encircled her. Her initial response was to do everything in her power to get her mother’s approval.
Every time Monse went to see her mother, she would dress differently. She replaced Brentwood’s skirt and straightened hair with Freeridge’s T-shirt, jeans, and wavy hair. “You often don’t know who you are if you come from a divided household,” Sierra told Teen Vogue.
Although Sierra’s family is divided, she has a conflict with her father rather than her mother, as Monse does. She drew attention to Monse’s failing relationship with Julia by drawing on her turbulent relationship with her father.
As Capri told Vulture, “I basically flipped those two roles in my head and I pretended that I was talking to my dad at that time.”
