Who Was Courtney Coco?
Courtney Coco was a bright young woman from Rapides Parish, Louisiana, who was going to Northwestern State University to get a degree in criminal justice. Stephanie Belgard, her mother, last saw her living on October 1, 2004, which was the first day of squirrel season.
The family had planned to go camping over the weekend, but Courtney said she wasn’t really the camping type because she didn’t like being outside. Stephanie remembers with fondness how hard her daughter worked and how determined she was to make a better life for herself.

Courtney’s body parts were found in an empty building in Winnie, Texas, on October 4, 2004. Even though her death was ruled a murder, the exact cause could not be found because of how her body had broken down. When her mother heard the news, she couldn’t believe it and thought it couldn’t be her daughter.
On April 13, 2021, seventeen years after Courtney’s death, David Anthony Burns was picked up and charged with second-degree murder. Burns used to be engaged to the victim’s older sister, Lace Evans, and it is thought that he killed Courtney while trying to rob her. During the trial, it came out that several witnesses had told the court about Burns and Courtney’s secret relationship.
Burns was found guilty on October 31, 2022, and on November 28, 2022, he was given a life term without the chance to get out. Even though justice has been done, Courtney’s family still misses their loved one.

In 2004, Courtney Coco, then 19 years old, went missing from her parent’s house while they were camping. Later, her bones were found in a Willie, Texas, building that had been left empty.
It was found that a pillow was used to suffocate the person to death. It took more than 16 years to solve the case. David Anthony Burns, Coco’s older sister’s fiance, and her secret boyfriend were arrested after witnesses said he had admitted to the crime.
