More than 3.5 million people killed in 10-year war in Syria: UN

At least 350,000 people have been killed in Syria’s 10-year war. The casualties ranged from members of various forces involved in the war to civilians, even women and children. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Friday. News Qatar-based Al-Jazeera.

Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, told the Human Rights Council that a new list of people killed in the war in Syria from March 2011 to March 2021 had been compiled. It has been found that 1 out of every 13 people killed is a woman or a child. And the actual number of people killed in the war is even higher, he said.

Earlier, the United Nations conducted a survey in 2014 to determine the number of people killed in the latest war in Syria. Till that time, 1 lakh 91 thousand 379 deaths were reported in the survey. According to the new list, the highest number of deaths in Syria until 2021 was in the Aleppo area. Only 51,631 Syrians have died in the long-held rebel-held region.

The United Nations has compiled a list of people killed in the war in Syria. Besides, the place and time of their death have also been taken into account. Meanwhile, the United Nations is working to provide more details about the victims. As a result, it will be possible to find out who was involved in some of the killings, Michelle Bachelet said.

Michelle Bachelet has called for the inclusion of not only the dead but also those missing in the long-running war in Syria. He said that this would provide details about the missing persons. In addition, the list will come in handy to help their families.

In the wake of the Arab Spring, protests began in March 2011 demanding democracy in Syria. President Bashar al-Assad has taken a strong stance to quell the protests. This led to a long-running civil war in Syria. This has led to the country’s most severe refugee crisis in the world. In recent years, about 5.6 million people have sought refuge in neighboring countries from Syria. In addition, more than one million Syrians have fled to European countries.

Ten years after the start of the war, most of Syria is now in the hands of Bashar al-Assad. The rest of the region is under the control of various foreign forces, including rebels. Analysts say there are no immediate signs of an end to the war in Syria. So they are worried that the people of the country will be in disaster for a long time.
