Career

In 1974, Bird was offered a scholarship to play collegiate basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers. He accepted the offer. After a little over a month of living on the Indiana University campus, he decided not to continue his education because he found the transition between the size of his rural hamlet and the big number of college students in Bloomington to be too difficult.

At the time of the 1978 NBA draught, the Boston Celtics had the sixth overall pick, which allowed them to select Bird. Instead of signing with the Celtics right away, he completed his senior year at Indiana State University and led the Sycamores all the way to the championship game of the NCAA tournament.

Red Auerbach, the general manager of the Celtics, has publicly stated that he will not pay Larry Bird more than any other Celtic currently on the roster. However, Bird’s agent, Bob Woolf, has informed Auerbach that Bird will reject any sub-market offers and simply enter the 1979 draught instead.

If Bird had entered the draught, Boston’s rights to him would have expired on June 25, when the draught began, and he would have been the most likely player selected first overall. Bird, along with Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and a number of other NBA superstars, was selected to play for the United States national basketball team at the Olympic Games held in Barcelona, Spain, in the summer of 1992.
