The fact that Kobe Bryant earned so much money as a professional player doesn’t diminish his legacy. Throughout his career, Kobe Bryant raked in hundreds of millions of dollars in endorsement deals and compensation. He invested well in his company’s future. At the time of his death, he had a $200 million investment in the beverage body armour. Six years ago, he paid $6 million for the stock. Coca-Cola paid $5.6 billion in October 2021 to acquire the entire body armour business.
The Current Market Value of Kobe Bryant’s Assets Is Unknown
As previously said, Kobe Bryant was worth $600 million at the time of his death. BodyArmour’s $200 million pre-tax valuations accounted for a significant portion of that total.
The Bryant family’s stake in BodyArmor had been whittled down to 5% by the time Coca-Cola bought it outright for $8 billion in October 2021. As a result of this deal, his estate was able to take in $400 million before taxes. That ended out to almost $270 million in the end, after taxes. So if Kobe were still living, his net worth would have risen from $600 million to $670 million as a result of this deal. body armour has increased its worth by $200 million and lost about $130 million owing to taxes, so this does not appear to be much of an increase. Kobe Bryant would have had a net worth of $700 million at the start of 2022 if previous acquisitions and transactions had gone his way.
As a Child
Kobe Bryant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on August 23, 1978. Joe Bryant, his father, was a former Philadelphia 76ers player. His parents chose the name “Kobe Beef” for him after seeing it on a menu at a restaurant in Kobe, Japan. Kobe was six years old when Joe retired from the NBA and relocated the family to Italy, where he resumed his career in a European league. Kobe honed his Italian skills and became fluent in the language. As a preteen, Kobe would visit the United States to play in summer basketball leagues. His parents relocated the family to Philadelphia, where he finished high school at Lower Merion High School when he retired from football.
In high school, Kobe led his team to their first state championship in 53 years through his basketball prowess. As a result, he was named to the Gatorade and USA Today All-American first teams for Men’s National Basketball Association. SAT scores were high enough to get him into many institutions with a scholarship, but Kobe decided to play in the NBA. Kobe is the NBA’s youngest player ever picked.
The Hornets originally selected Kobe Bryant in the first round, but the Lakers acquired him in a trade before the draught even took place. To sign his rookie deal, Kobe’s parents had to co-sign because he was only 17 years old. A three-year, $3.5 million NBA contract was his first professional contract.
Kobe became the NBA’s youngest starter at the age of 18 years and 7 months. At the end of his third season with the team, he truly started to shine. There were comparisons to Magic Johnson and the like being made about him at this point.
A $70 million, the six-year deal extension was also part of his third year. Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson took over in 1999. The Lakers, led by Jackson and Kobe, would go on to win five NBA championships during Jackson’s stint there. Three consecutive years from 2000 to 2002 are included in this.
How Much Does Kobe Bryant Make?
Just in salary alone, Kobe Bryant raked in more than $328 million throughout his NBA career with the LA Lakers. A three-year, $90 million extension agreed upon in 2010 is another big NBA contract. He agreed to a two-year, $48.5 million contract extension in 2013. Kobe got $25 million in compensation in his final NBA season. Throughout his career, Kobe earned an estimated $350 million through endorsements. That tallied out to a total of $680 million during his career.
Nike, Sprite, McDonald’s, Turkish Airlines, Lenovo, Hublot, and Panini are just a few of the brands he’s worked with throughout the years. Companies like Alibaba, Sina.com, and Mercedes Benz signed lucrative sponsorship deals with Kobe because of his fame in China. For the first few years of his career, he was signed to Adidas. He signed a six-year, $48 million Adidas contract before the 1996 season.
Following his sexual assault charges in 2003, many of Kobe’s endorsement contracts were terminated. Nike, on the other hand, signed him to a four-year, $10 million-per-year contract the same year. For the first two years of his career, Kobe did not appear in any Nike marketing materials.
It was just a matter of time until endorsement deals came back in full force.
Investment in Body Armor
In March of this year, Kobe bought a $6 million stake in sports drink BodyArmour, acquiring a 10% equity share.
Earlier this year, Coca-Cola purchased a 15% share in BodyArmor, valuing the company at $2 billion, in August 2018. For Kobe’s investment to be worth $200 million before taxes, he had to put $6 million into the company. After taking over bottling and distribution, Coca-Cola gained a 15% share in the company.
Coca-Cola paid $5.6 billion for the remaining 70% of BodyArmor in October 2021, valuing the company at $8 billion. Kobe’s interest in the company had been cut to 5% at the time of the acquisition, resulting in a $400 million windfall for his estate.
