The new television series Matlock issues a warning, saying it’s irresponsible to undervalue the abilities of older women. The new series, which is loosely modeled on the popular courtroom drama of the 1980s and 1990s, stars Kathy Bates, the winner of the Academy Award, as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, an unassuming senior citizen whose outward appearance conceals her sharp legal intellect.
Speaking exclusively to Closer, Kathy said of the program at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour, “The complexity of the role and the writing — I mean, I pinch myself every day.”
Although 76-year-old Kathy acknowledges that “I’ve been a huge fan, just as an actor, of Andy Griffith,” her show is not the same as the one that the Mayberry sheriff made popular. While Matty Matlock is blatantly disregarded because of her age and gender, Andy’s Ben Matlock was frequently undervalued for his legendary demeanor.
According to executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, “I wanted our heroine to be constantly telling the audience that she’s being underestimated.” “And after that, I wanted the audience to have fun watching her exploit that ignorance.”
Kathy’s Female-Led Role
Another show about women empowering one another is Matlock. Matty goes back to work with senior attorney Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) at the esteemed legal practice where she spent her formative years.
Kathy states, “There’s a conflict between [Matty’s] marriage and this new relationship she’s having at work with this woman that she so admires.” They mesh well. And I believe that she starts to appreciate that aspect of her life even more.
Matlock has been a blessing for Kathy, who has had difficulty landing varied roles while having a solid body of work. “I simply feel really fortunate. With everything I’ve learnt over the past 50 years, I get to play all of those levels,” she exclaims. “I simply adore having the ability to play so many different notes.”
