Ono grew up in Tokyo, but in 1952 she came to New York City to be with her family. In the early 1960s, she became involved with the downtown artists scene in New York City, which included the Fluxus group.
In 1969, she married English singer John Lennon of the Beatles, who made her famous. They went on to record as a duo in the Plastic Ono Band.

Yoko Ono’s Childhood: Moving Around a Lot
Isoko Ono, Ono’s mother, gave birth to her in Tokyo City on February 18, 1933. Eisuke Ono: Her father used to be a classical pianist and is now a rich banker. Eisuke was sent to San Francisco, California, by his job at the Yokohama Specie Bank two weeks before Ono was born.
When Ono was two years old, she met her dad for the first time. When Ono’s family moved back to Japan in 1937, he went to Tokyo’s Gakushin, which is one of the most prestigious schools in Japan. From the time she was four years old until she was twelve or thirteen, Ono learned to play the piano.
The family moved to New York City in 1940. With Eisuke’s move from New York City to Hanoi in French Indochina the next year, the family went back to Japan. Keimei Gakuen, the well-known Christian grade school run by the Mitsui family, let Ono become a student.
During World War II and the firebombing on March 9, 1945, she stayed in Tokyo. During the firebombing, she and other family members found refuge in a unique bunker in Tokyo’s Azabu neighborhood, away from the harsh bombing. After that, Ono and her family went to the Karuizawa mountain resort.
When the war finished in 1945, Ono stayed in Japan while her family moved to Scarsdale, New York, a wealthy town 25 miles (40 km) north of midtown Manhattan.
