The plot takes place a few decades before to the events of the first Transformers film and the journey of Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), while Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set in the 1990s.
Naturally, Witwicky’s campaign with the Autobots eventually spans a number of years and a few films before giving way to the stories of Cade Yeager (Mark Whalberg) and Bay’s last Transformer movies. However, Rise of the Beasts tells a distinct story before all of that.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Remains a Series Reboot
There are a number of subtle clues suggesting Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a new chapter in the franchise’s history, even though Bay has been confirmed to be working on the film. The Unicron retcon in Rise of the Beast is a clear sign of that reset.
Rise of the Beasts reimagines Unicron as a danger on a mission to destroy Earth, whereas Bay’s Transformers: The Last Night depicted Unicron as the planet Earth, where Earth coalesced around the evil monster.
Furthermore, Rise of the Beasts aligns more with Bumblebee’s revised history, even if it doesn’t directly follow it, and contradicts the Transformers’ timeline more broadly. Compared to Bumblebee, Rise of the Beasts is a more proactive step toward a franchise relaunch because of those significant changes.
With its daring fusion of prequel, sequel, and reboot themes, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is upending the series. It builds on Bumblebee’s history while introducing new groups such as the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons.
