Trunks will go to great lengths in the following chapter to demonstrate his basketball prowess, but it appears that his competitor will be the incoming new beta at his school; while trying to attract Mai’s attention, Beta swoops in and steals the ball from him.
Seeing our heroes play basketball is a refreshing change after seeing them play other sports like baseball and other sports, but it looks like Beta ends up crossing Trunks and laying up one on him, and all of this mind you happens while Trunks is trying to get Mai’s attention, so, it doesn’t feel like Dragon Ball because you have two kids, one, of course, being an Android, yes! A game of basketball with Trunks would feature Beta, an Andoird, and one, a Saiyan.

At first glance, Beta’s position here might lead one to wonder whether he’s planning to go Ultra Instinct or something similar. However, while all of this is going down and Trunks is shown frustrated, Beta is actually recording footage of everything Trunks is doing, including demonstrating his abilities at Blue Hal High School, since this will occur at the exact same time that Dr Hedo had planned.
What I’m getting from this is that Kid Beta is doing everything in his power to get under Trunks’ skin, and the other Alpha Androids are watching and trying to figure out if this is the same Kid who busted up in their factory and took them all out when they went back inside Blue Hal Highschool (if you guys remember the old video game called Bully From Rockstar).

When he throws the ball, it ricochets off the wall and hits Trunk when he is stocking under to tie his shoe. Mai is kind of the first person to pick up on something very unusual about this kid, and later we see them at lunch where Beta is once again trying to make Trubk’s life miserable here. All of this serves the purpose of noting that without them having to realize that Beta is working for Dr Hedo this entire time.
In class, Mai notices a student who appears to have a stitched-up neck, which is really rare. After all, what kind of student would have something that obviously sticks out from their body? This is significant, as Trunks understands later on because he recognizes the pieces he saw stitched into the body of Alpha, the enormous Android he had fought within the factory, as being identical to those on Trunks.
So Trunks kind of knew what the deal was and then Beta ends up putting on a suit pretending to be like the supervillain and goes after Goten, which from that point then prompts Trunks to step into action because he sees that Goten is a quote in trouble even though he is not, and without the kind of giving away his identity, he looks over onto his watch and goes as far as distant Mai by letting her know that he gotta go.
