Does David Alive in Shadow and Bone?

David, being a Grisha, is a Durast, so categorizing him under the Materialki order. He possesses extraordinary talent; even the Darkling, who has existed for ages, acknowledges David’s worth and appreciates him.

David harbors romantic feelings for Genya Safin (Daisy Head), which are mutual. However, due to his soft-spoken and uncomfortable demeanor, he finds it challenging to articulate his emotions to Genya.

In season 1, David begins to have disillusionment with the Darkling. Following the demise of the amplifier referred to as Morozova’s stag, David constructs a collar from the stag’s antlers, subsequently infused with Alina’s skin.

Although it enhances Alina’s capabilities, the pointed extremities of the antlers protrude from her torso. David inserts a second antler-crafted piece on the Darkling’s hand, so granting the latter access to Alina’s abilities.

In season 2, upon discovering the Darkling’s survival, David approaches him and reunites with Genya. They quickly discern that the Darkling has forfeited any remaining humanity during his tenure in the Fold.

David and Genya resolve to escape together and proceed to Alina, who is now determined to thwart the Darkling’s schemes. Nonetheless, Genya is apprehended by the Darkling. Upon David’s decision to rescue her from his concealed position, she persuades him to escape.

In retaliation for her defiance, the Darkling commands one of his shadow creatures, the Nichevo’ya, to assault Genya, resulting in facial scars and injury to one of her eyes.

David approaches Alina and Nikolai Lantsov, the second prince of Ravka. He understandably receives a frosty response from the Sun Summoner. During their last encounter, the instruments he crafted subjected Alina to the Darkling’s dominion.

As time progresses, David demonstrates his value by creating several small, science-based instruments for the other Grisha.

His second encounter with Genya is far more poignant, leading to the commencement of a relationship between them. Prior to the pivotal confrontation, he inquires of Genya of her preferred gemstone.

Initially, she responds with emerald, indicative of the sexual assault inflicted upon her by the monarch; however, she subsequently alters her response to ruby. During the Nichevo’ya assault, David persuades Genya to enter the dumbwaiter and subsequently seals it behind her using his abilities.

Upon recognizing his actions, Genya implores him to unlock the door. In what appears to be his final words to her, David describes Genya as courageous and resilient before confronting the Nichevo’ya.

David’s demise is unavoidable; so, even if he is somehow still alive in the series, he will ultimately perish in subsequent seasons. Although the designers can bestow a happy ending upon him and Genya, his demise provides a gratifying, albeit poignant, resolution to their narrative.
