Charles Allan Hill was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 6, 1951, to Eileen and Norbert, and moved to the Oneida Indian reservation in 1962 with his family. Jimmy, his sibling, existed.
In 1969, he graduated from West De Pere High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he majored in speech and theatre and was a member of the Broom Street Theatre Group.
In the 1970s, he was a member of Hanay Geiogomah’s Native American Theatre Group. The troupe performed Coyote Tracks and Foghorn at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City and toured Germany. In 1973 and the United States in 1974. After graduating, Hill moved to Los Angeles and began working as an actor and comedian.
