An Animated Barbie Special is Being Created by Netflix and Mattel.
The movie “Barbie,” which is being directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, is currently in the middle of production and is scheduled to be released on July 21, 2023. Although this is not the first time that Barbie will serve as the subject of a feature film, this will be the first official live-action “Barbie” release. Additionally, it will be the first major motion picture among what have otherwise been exclusively animated, made-for-TV, and/or streaming exclusive projects.
In the meantime, Netflix has recently announced that it will be the home of a brand new “He-Man” animated series, which will premiere simultaneously with Kevin Smith’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” in 2021. It is notable that “He-Man” began life as an action figure produced by Mattel. Since Mattel is also the corporation that came up with the idea for and continues to manufacture Barbie dolls, it is the owner of the “Barbie” intellectual property (IP), which is being adapted by Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and a few other actors for their upcoming film.
There is already some “Barbie” content available on Netflix, such as “Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse,” which is widely considered to be among the top cartoons available on Netflix. Now, thanks to a new arrangement that was reached between Mattel and the streaming service, lots more “Barbie” projects will be brought to Netflix. One of these projects will be an interactive special in the form that was made popular by “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch” years earlier.
Barbie: Epic Road Trip Will Put Viewers in Charge of an Animated Barbie Adventure
According to a report that was released by The Hollywood Reporter on October 21, Netflix and Mattel have finalised a multi-year partnership that would make Netflix the host of many new “Barbie” projects, some of which will be exclusive to the streaming service for the duration of the contract. The first of these is a computer-animated programme called “Barbie: Epic Road Trip,” which invites viewers to participate by making choices that have an impact on the story’s progression. It is expected that viewers will have the option to make more than 100 decisions that will affect the course of the story, which will result in more than 500 different outcomes.
As the title of this film suggests, the characters in “Barbie: Epic Road Trip” travel across the country with one another. America Young plays Barbie “Malibu” Roberts, Tatiana Varria plays Barbie “Brooklyn” Roberts, Ritesh Rajan plays Ken Roberts, and Kirsten Day plays Skipper Roberts. On their way to an audition in New York City to perform backup vocals for a well-known pop star, this trio is currently providing shelter to animals that are looking for forever homes.
According to Fred Soulie, senior vice president and general manager of Mattel Television, “We’ve been consistently expanding the presence of Barbie on the ever-growing streaming landscape through episodic series, long-form movies and specials, digital gaming, YouTube short-form content, and now, our first-ever interactive special.” This statement was made by the company. “We’ve been consistently expanding the presence of Barbie on the ever-growing streaming landscape through episodic series, long-form movies and specials, digital gaming, and now,
When “Barbie: Epic Road Trip” debuts on Netflix on October 25, users will have the opportunity to play an active role in Barbie’s most recent journey, which takes place on the open road.
