Scarlett Johansson Reveals Why She Panicked After Her First Date With Colin Jost
Los Angeles, CA — Five years into her marriage with Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost, actress Scarlett Johansson is looking back on their first date — and the surprising panic that followed.
Appearing on the December 1 episode of NBC’s Today show, the Black Widow star admitted she had little experience with traditional dating before meeting Jost, leading to an awkward (but now endearing) misunderstanding that nearly cut their romance short.
“Nobody Had Ever Asked Me Out Before”
Johansson, 40, confessed that when Jost first asked her on a proper dinner date, she was completely caught off guard.

“Nobody had ever asked me out before,” she revealed. “I was a serial monogamist and I never got the sort of traditional, ‘Hey, would you like to have dinner sometime?’”
Used to long-term relationships rather than casual dating, the actress admitted she “didn’t know how to handle it” when Jost approached her with a classic invitation.
The Italian Restaurant That Started It All
Their first date took place at a cozy Italian restaurant in New York’s East Village — a setting that Johansson remembers fondly but also associates with a bit of panic.
“He actually asked me out on a date,” she said. “We went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village. It was a lovely date. We had dinner.”
After the meal, however, things took an unexpected turn when Jost suggested continuing the evening.
“Afterward, he was like, ‘I’m meeting friends, let’s go grab a drink,’ and I hadn’t dated basically ever, so I was just like, ‘I have to go now. I need to leave,’” Johansson recalled with a laugh.
A Misunderstanding Turned into Marriage
According to Johansson, Jost later assumed she wasn’t interested — when in reality, she was just overwhelmed. Fortunately, the two reconnected, and their relationship blossomed soon after.

The couple, who met on the set of Saturday Night Live years earlier, tied the knot in October 2020 in an intimate ceremony. They share a son, Cosmo, 4, while Johansson is also mom to Rose, 11, from her previous marriage to journalist Romain Dauriac.
A Love Story Built on Humor and Patience
Since their wedding, Johansson and Jost have become one of Hollywood’s most low-key but beloved couples, often blending humor and sincerity when speaking about their relationship.
Jost, who now hosts Pop Culture Jeopardy!, has described Johansson as his “best friend,” while she frequently credits his kindness and humor for grounding her busy life.
Their story, which started with a nervous dinner date and an early misunderstanding, has turned into a steady partnership admired by fans worldwide.
