‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Reboot Officially Announced at Hulu, Nearly 20 Years After Original Finale
Fans of early-2000s television have reason to celebrate: “Malcolm in the Middle” is officially returning, with a four-episode revival titled “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.” The new mini-series will premiere on April 10, 2026, exclusively on Hulu, marking the beloved sitcom’s first on-screen return since its original run ended in 2006.
Major Cast Members Return for the Limited Series
Hulu’s revival reunites key stars from the original Fox sitcom, including Bryan Cranston as Hal, Jane Kaczmarek as Lois, and Frankie Muniz, who once again steps into the shoes of the brilliant but perpetually stressed Malcolm.
Several of Malcolm’s onscreen siblings are also back, but Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, will not return. His role has been recast with actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, as Sullivan stepped away from acting years ago.
Malcolm Comes Home for a Major Family Milestone

Set nearly two decades after the Wilkerson family last appeared on TV, the reboot storyline centers on Malcolm returning home to celebrate Hal and Lois’ 40th wedding anniversary. The revival also introduces new characters, including Malcolm’s daughter (played by Keeley Karsten) and his girlfriend (played by Kiana Madeira).
Disney Leans Hard Into Nostalgia
Disney, which acquired 20th Century Fox’s television assets in 2019, continues to mine its massive content library for nostalgic revivals. The company revealed that 60% of all TV watching is now library content, and Gen Z in particular gravitates toward older shows for their comfort and familiarity.
“Malcolm in the Middle” fits squarely into Disney’s push for feel-good, legacy television that resonates across generations — similar to its revival of “Scrubs,” which returns in February with the original cast.
The Original Home Rebuilt From Scratch
Although the Wilkerson home remains a trademark of the show, the actual Studio City house used for exterior shots was heavily renovated years ago. For the reboot, the production—led by Disney Television Studios and New Regency—painstakingly rebuilt the home as part of the studio set to match the original feel.
Behind the Scenes: Creator and Director Return
Series creator Linwood Boomer returned as writer and executive producer, ensuring the revival maintains the tone and spirit of the original. Director Ken Kwapis, known for his work on the classic series, is also back to helm all four episodes.
With much of the original cast returning, a familiar setting, and a creative team that shaped the show’s signature voice, “Life’s Still Unfair” is poised to give longtime fans a nostalgia-packed reunion while introducing the Wilkerson chaos to a new generation.
