Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about a terrifying mid-air scare that left her convinced she wouldn’t make it out alive. During a candid appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, hosted by Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, the Die My Love actress recounted the horrifying experience of being aboard a plane that suffered double engine failure.
The 35-year-old Oscar winner reflected on the incident, which occurred in 2016, while she was traveling with a family friend. Despite being a seasoned traveler today, Lawrence admitted that this particular flight nearly changed her outlook on flying forever.
The Day Everything Went Wrong Mid-Flight
Lawrence explained that things started going wrong not long after takeoff. One of the plane’s engines suddenly failed, forcing everyone on board to remain calm as the pilots worked to stabilize the aircraft.
“I’ve been really good with flying lately,” she said, “but at that time, I was still nervous. And then one of the engines went out.”
Trying to keep her calm, her travel companion reassured her by saying that as long as she could still hear the other engine, everything was fine. But what happened next made the situation infinitely worse.
“He was like, ‘You’ll know it’s bad if the plane goes silent,’” Lawrence recalled. “And as soon as he said that, it went silent.”
That’s when Lawrence realized the unthinkable — both engines had failed.
“I was like, ‘The other engine went out, Robbie! The other engine went out!’” she remembered. “And he just slowly turned away from me and said, ‘I know it did.’ And then he just looked out the window, and I was on my own.”
“We Thought We Were Going to Die”
The Hunger Games actress revealed that everyone on board — from the passengers to the flight crew — truly believed they were going to crash. In the chaos, she recalled people making emotional calls and leaving farewell messages for loved ones.
“Everyone thought we were going to die,” Lawrence said. “We were leaving messages to our families, saying goodbye.”
Miraculously, the pilots managed to make an emergency landing, bringing the plane down safely. Once on the ground, Lawrence said the passengers were overcome with relief.
“The firemen broke open the door, and all of us just started hugging and sobbing,” she said. “It was one of those moments where you realize how fragile everything is.”
From Fear to Strength
Although the experience left a lasting impact, Lawrence shared that she’s managed to regain her confidence in flying over the years.
“I’ve been really good with flying lately,” she added. “It’s taken time, but I’ve learned to relax and trust the process again.”
Her honesty resonated with listeners, many of whom praised her vulnerability in discussing a trauma that could happen to anyone.
