Heated Rivalry Creator Confirms Season 2 Timeline and Addresses New Character Connection
Heated Rivalry has barely wrapped its breakout first season, yet momentum for season 2 is already building — and creator Jacob Tierney is finally confirming when fans can expect the next chapter of Shane and Ilya’s story. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Tierney laid out an early premiere window and clarified how the unexpected addition of Common Goal character Kyle Swift fits into the series going forward.
Hudson Williams Nearly Leaked the Renewal
Star Hudson Williams admitted he nearly spoiled the news in multiple interviews, joking, “I am the weakest link… they took me off the email list.” While the HBO Max drama was an instant hit — becoming the platform’s No. 1 show on premiere day and generating major global buzz — the official renewal wasn’t revealed until Dec. 12. Two days earlier, Tierney gathered Williams and co-star Connor Storrie on Zoom to film their reaction to the announcement.
Season 2 Premiere Won’t Be a Long Wait
According to Tierney, fans won’t face a lengthy delay before new episodes arrive. The creator confirmed the second season won’t premiere at the same time next year, but it also won’t take two years — or even 18 months.
“We’re going to go as fast as we can,” Tierney said. “But the show is written and directed by one person, so there’s only so fast a track to go down. I haven’t started writing yet, but we want to deliver a great second season.”
Season 2 will continue focusing on Shane and Ilya’s evolving relationship, drawing inspiration from Rachel Reid’s follow-up novel The Long Game. Williams and Storrie recently filmed a promo in which they read excerpts hinting at a deeper, more mature dynamic between the now-established couple.
What the Stars Want to Explore Next

Storrie teased he is eager to play with the emotional terrain depicted in The Long Game, saying, “Now that they’ve chosen each other, what does it look like to keep choosing through new obstacles and self-realizations?” He added that Tierney ultimately decides what makes it into the adaptation, so nothing is confirmed yet.
Creator Confirms Common Goal Character Is Canon
Season 1 quietly introduced Kyle Swift — portrayed by Matthew Finlan — a character originating from Reid’s book Common Goal. Tierney confirmed it is, in fact, the same Kyle from the novels.
“I don’t know what his love life looks like or when we’ll explore it,” Tierney said, “but that’s the same Kyle for sure.”
The crossover deepens the possibility of an expanded Game Changer Universe on screen, though Tierney emphasized no official storyline for Kyle has been mapped yet.
