Gwyneth Paltrow is officially back on the big screen, and she’s opening up about what drew her out of her acting hiatus. The Oscar-winning star appeared on Good Morning America on Monday to discuss her role in “Marty Supreme,” which premieres on December 25, marking her first major film appearance since 2019.

Why Paltrow Returned to Acting

Paltrow credited her return to a “confluence of events”—including the opportunity to work with director Josh Safdie, co-star Timothée Chalamet, and the personal milestone of becoming an empty nester.

“I’ve tried to work with really interesting filmmakers my whole career,” she said, referencing directors like Wes Anderson and Paul Thomas Anderson. “And also my kids — it was like, empty nest. And I thought, ‘Why not try?’”

She added that stepping back onto a New York set felt “really fun,” sharing, “I’m so glad I did, because I had the best time.”

Her Role in Marty Supreme

In the film, Paltrow plays Kay Stone, a retired movie star who becomes entangled with Marty Mauser, an aspiring ping pong champion played by Chalamet. Marty is described as “a young man with a dream no one respects” who “goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.”

Gwyneth Paltrow Opens Up About Sex Scenes With Timothée Chalamet

Paltrow said she experienced several “firsts” on set, including working with Chalamet and watching Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank take on his first major acting role as her character’s husband.

“It’s a big role,” she said of O’Leary’s casting. “I thought he nailed it. Everyone was so impressed.”

The Viral Kiss Photo and Mom-Group Frenzy

One of the film’s earliest viral moments came when paparazzi captured Paltrow and Chalamet kissing in character in a park.

“You should have seen my mommy-group chats,” she laughed. “All the moms were pretty stoked. My British school moms too — yeah, it was like a global event.”

The kiss instantly trended on social media, further fueling anticipation for the film’s release.

Why the Project Felt “Special”

Paltrow noted that the film’s artistic pedigree was a major factor in her decision to join the cast. She praised the team behind the camera, including legendary cinematographer Darius Khondji and production designer Jack Fisk.

“I think the group of people — the collective — is what attracts me,” she said. “Being in something you feel like is a very special group.”

Working with Chalamet was also a draw. “He’s obviously so talented,” Paltrow said, noting that Marty’s emotional arc moved her deeply when she watched the finished film.

What About a Return to the MCU?

With “Avengers: Doomsday” set for release in December 2026, fans are already speculating whether Paltrow will reprise her role as Pepper Potts. When asked about it on GMA, she played coy.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure I’ve heard of that one,” she said with a smirk.
