Paris, France — The Grevin Museum in Paris unveiled a new wax figure of Princess Diana on Thursday, showcasing her in the legendary “revenge dress” — a symbol of strength and independence that captivated the world in 1994.
A Striking Tribute to the People’s Princess
The wax museum, often compared to Madame Tussauds in London, now features Diana alongside other global icons from the entertainment and fashion world. Notably, her wax figure stands apart from those of King Charles III and Queen Elizabeth II, who are displayed in the heads-of-state gallery.
Diana’s wax likeness dons a replica of the black off-the-shoulder gown designed by Christina Stambolian, which she famously wore the same night Prince Charles publicly confessed to infidelity in a television interview. The bold appearance was widely seen as a powerful declaration of self-worth and confidence, earning the nickname “the revenge dress.”

The unveiling took place on November 20, intentionally chosen as the 30th anniversary of Diana’s groundbreaking 1995 BBC interview — the one where she famously remarked, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a little bit crowded.”
That candid admission referenced Charles’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, now Queen Camilla. The museum described the timing as a “sly reference” to one of the defining moments in Diana’s life and her complex relationship with the royal institution.
A Bold Choice and Cultural Fascination
Royal experts say the decision to immortalize Diana in this particular look is both bold and symbolic.
“From Charles’s point of view and Buckingham Palace, they wouldn’t be delighted about this entry at Grevin,” said royal commentator Bertrand Deckers. “They’d clearly prefer that we forgot about all this and never spoke of it.”
Still, Deckers acknowledged that Diana’s enduring image as a “wronged and wounded woman” continues to resonate deeply with the public, especially in France, where fascination with the British royal family remains strong.
The wax figure was sculpted by Laurent Mallamaci, a Paris-based artist tasked with creating a lifelike tribute that would withstand intense scrutiny from Diana’s admirers around the world.
A Lasting Symbol
The museum revealed that it had considered creating a Diana waxwork before her untimely death in August 1997, but abandoned the plan at the time out of respect. Now, nearly three decades later, the exhibit celebrates her legacy of grace, resilience, and timeless influence — in the very city where her life tragically ended.
