Grey’s Anatomy Star Camilla Luddington Reacts to “Horrifying” Season 22 Fall Finale
Camilla Luddington is just as shaken as fans after Grey’s Anatomy’s intense Season 22 fall finale. The episode, titled “When I Crash,” delivered back-to-back shocks that left viewers on edge — including a devastating health scare for Luddington’s character, Dr. Jo Wilson, and a major diagnosis for veteran surgeon Dr. Richard Webber, played by James Pickens Jr.
Camilla Luddington Says the Fall Finale Was “Terrifying”
The midseason finale, which aired on Nov. 13, marked one of the most emotional episodes of the season. In an interview with TheWrap, Luddington admitted she was stunned when she first read the script.
“This is what we do best — these horrifying, terrifying midseason finales,” she said. “The script was written so well, and that being the last thing that we see, I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ The writers are just incredible.”
The episode saw Jo — who is pregnant with twins — experience shortness of breath before doctors reveal she is suffering from heart failure. Despite the best efforts of Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) and Dr. Ben Warren (Jason George), her condition rapidly deteriorates.

As the situation worsens, Winston is forced to perform an emergency C-section to save Jo and her babies — a high-stakes procedure he hasn’t done since medical school. Fans will have to wait until January 8 to find out whether Jo and the twins survive.
“This is a situation where everything hangs in the balance and survival is not guaranteed for a lot of us involved,” Luddington explained. “The cost of a mistake could be everything.”
A Shocking Diagnosis for Dr. Webber
While Jo’s medical emergency gripped viewers, another twist unfolded that left fans equally stunned. In the same episode, Dr. Richard Webber revealed to Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) that he had been diagnosed with cancer.
Luddington said she learned about the shocking turn during the cast’s table read.
“I actually don’t read the whole script ahead of time — I like to hear it out loud for the first time,” she shared. “When it got to the Richard part, I audibly gasped.”
The news marks a major shift for the long-running series, as Webber’s health battle is expected to be a central storyline when the show returns in 2026.
Fans Brace for an Emotional Return
As for what’s next, Luddington warned fans that the series is only getting darker.
“If there’s one word to sit on, it would be ‘brutal,’” she said. “Emotionally prepare because the next episode coming up after this is worse, to be honest. So yeah — just drink a lot of wine and try to compartmentalize that this is not happening on Grey’s Anatomy until January.”
The actress’s comments have only heightened anticipation for the midseason return, with fans taking to social media to speculate about Jo’s fate and the outcome of Webber’s cancer diagnosis.
A Legacy of Shocking Grey Sloan Moments
For nearly two decades, Grey’s Anatomy has been known for its shocking cliffhangers and emotional gut punches. From Meredith Grey’s near-drowning and Derek Shepherd’s death to the hospital shooting and plane crash tragedies, the medical drama continues to redefine high-stakes storytelling.
This latest finale, however, may rank among its most intense. Fans praised Luddington’s performance as “heartbreaking and raw,” while others called the episode “classic Grey’s — just when you think you can breathe, something else happens.”
What’s Next for Season 22
With Jo’s life hanging in the balance and Richard’s diagnosis shaking Grey Sloan to its core, the second half of Season 22 is expected to bring even more emotional twists. Series veteran Ellen Pompeo, who remains an executive producer, teased earlier this year that the season would focus heavily on themes of legacy, family, and resilience — all of which are now front and center.
As the show approaches its milestone 20th anniversary, creator Shonda Rhimes and showrunner Meg Marinis appear determined to remind fans why Grey’s Anatomy remains one of TV’s most enduring dramas.
“It’s Grey’s Anatomy at its most intense,” Luddington concluded. “We all finished filming that episode completely drained, but also proud — because it’s the kind of storytelling that keeps people watching after 22 seasons.”
Grey’s Anatomy returns with new episodes on January 8, 2026, on ABC and will stream the next day on Hulu.
