Controversy
Due to Shaggy’s hippy demeanour and persistent hunger, some viewers of the original Scooby-Doo believed he used marijuana. In a Newsweek story, Casey Kasem was questioned if he had ever seen such undercurrent in the series.
In response, Kasem stated, “There was nothing like that at all” and explained, “I don’t know why, but it was a wholesome show from beginning to end.” Kasem was unaware of the fan perspective until the interviewer brought it to his attention.
Several scenes mentioning Shaggy’s alleged drug use were filmed for the Scooby-Doo film. But only a few were featured in the final cut. A minor character introduces herself to Shaggy as “Mary Jane” (slang for marijuana), to which Shaggy replies, “Like, that is my fave name.”
Current Shaggy voice actor Matthew Lillard does not believe he smokes marijuana “He just seems like that. He is a bit funny and high, endearing and fearful, and he just so happens to be hungry.”
In an internet radio interview with Stu Shostak, series creators Joe Ruby and Ken Spears recalled. They never intended for Shaggy to be a marijuana smoker, and they “took offence” at the gags in the 2002 feature.
