Who is Noel Smith?
Noel “Razor” Smith, born on 24 December 1960, is a British author and ex-convict. At the age of 14, Noel had his first brush with the police while growing up in London.
Smith appeared in court for the first time due to a spree of burglaries he denied committing. After the charges were dismissed, Smith, in his own words, “threw himself into criminality.”
At the age of 16, Smith appeared at the Old Bailey on charges of armed robbery and possession of guns; he was given a three-year sentence.
After his initial sentence in jail, Smith resumed his criminal lifestyle by executing repeated armed robberies, but the repercussions of his actions soon caught up with him.
How Long Did Noel Smith Spend in Prison?
Noel Smith spent the majority of his adult life in prison, having been convicted of 58 separate offenses over a span of 33 years. Smith, reflecting on his past, stated, “In the mid-1970s, I was a juvenile offender, and in the 1980s and beyond, I was an adult prisoner.”
For criminal damage, Smith received his shortest prison sentence of seven days. After being found guilty of perpetrating bank robberies and having firearms, his longest jail term was for life. In 1992, Noel escaped from the prison where he was being detained and spent 72 days on the run.
During his time on the run, he robbed 14 additional banks and became known as the “city gentleman robber” because he robbed banks while wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase. In 1993, he was re-arrested, and as a result, he received 14 consecutive sentences, leaving him with 10 years to serve.
His most recent conviction was in 1999, following nearly a decade and more than 200 robberies. During his final stretch in prison, Smith decided he had had enough and wanted to alter his lifestyle.
Noel stated that he trained himself to read and write and sought refuge in literature while serving his sentence. In addition, he obtained a certificate from the London School of Journalism and an A-level in law.
