What Happened to Coach in New Girl? His Story and Return Explained

What Happened to Coach in New Girl

Upon ending her relationship with her unfaithful boyfriend in the pilot episode of New Girl, Jessica Day sought new accommodation and ultimately relocated to reside with three men: Schmidt, Nick, and Coach.

However, by the time the second episode was broadcast, Coach was absent. Alterations subsequent to the pilot are not uncommon; nonetheless, this particular change was fairly unexpected, given that Coach was a pivotal figure. What transpired with Coach, and why did he appear solely in the pilot episode?

Jess experienced some difficulty throughout that pilot. While employed as a school teacher at Coolidge Middle School and then at Banyon Canyon, Jess returned home one day to discover her boyfriend, Spencer, engaging in infidelity. The logical decision was to terminate the relationship.

Although that was the correct choice, it also generated as many issues as it resolved. At that time, Jess resided with Spencer, and the dissolution of their relationship rendered her homeless.

Who Was Coach on New Girl?

After the end of her relationship, Jess seized the opportunity to respond to a Craigslist advertisement, a decision that does not invariably yield positive outcomes. Thus, Jess encountered the three individuals who would evolve into some of her dearest companions.

In Nick’s situation, they would cultivate a significantly deeper connection. However, one of the three roommates was Coach, whose narrative trajectory throughout the series diverged significantly from that of the other characters.

Portrayed by Damon Wayans Jr., Ernie “Coach” Tagliaboo was a personal trainer and former health educator residing with Schmidt and Nick. The trio had an interview with Jess as she was searching for a new residence.

She relocated to their residence in the pilot episode; however, by Episode 2, Coach had departed, supplanted in the apartment by a former basketball player called Winston Bishop. The stated reason was because Coach cohabited with his girlfriend, Malia.

Why Did Coach Leave New Girl?

The rationale behind Coach’s leaving was markedly different behind the scenes. The character of Coach was portrayed by the skilled and humorous Damon Wayans Jr. During the filming of the pilot for New Girl, Wayans was involved in the series Happy Endings, which he did not anticipate would be revived for a second season. Upon the renewal of Happy Endings, Wayans was compelled to leave New Girl.

Happy Endings concluded following its third season. Despite the sad circumstances, the conclusion of the series allowed Wayans to resume his role in New Girl. Coach returned as a full-time cast member in Season 3.

The rationale for this was once more centered on Coach’s girlfriend, Malia; however, this time their separation led to Coach reentering the lives of Jess and her associates.

The situation became increasingly complex when Coach ceased to be a series regular at the conclusion of Season 4, particularly as he made intermittent appearances during Seasons 5 to 7 and was often referenced.

His absence was warranted this time due to the Coach relocating to New York with his new girlfriend. By the conclusion of the series, it had become exceedingly challenging to track Coach’s numerous arrivals and departures.

How did He Come Back in the Show?

Coach’s journey on New Girl was replete with unforeseen developments. Initially introduced in the pilot, he vanished before Episode 2 owing to Damon Wayans Jr.’s prior obligation to Happy Endings. Upon the conclusion of that show, he rejoined as a regular in Season 3, only to depart once more in Season 4, relocating to New York with his girlfriend.

Although he appeared as a guest in subsequent seasons, his narrative arc remained erratic. His frequent departures and reappearances rendered him one of the most surprising characters on the program, keeping viewers in suspense.
