William Stanley Milligan was born in Miami Beach, Florida, on February 14, 1955. In the 1970s, a court case he was in Ohio got a lot of attention. He was the first defendant to be found not guilty because he had more than one mind. “The Minds of Billy Milligan,” a nonfiction book by Daniel Keyes that won an award, told a lot of people about his life.

Under the name The Milligan Wars, Daniel Keyes’s follow-up books were published in Japan, Taiwan, France, and Ukraine. Hollywood tried more than once to turn Daniel Keyes’s books into movies. For a movie version, even James Cameron and Todd Graff wrote a script together. Warner Bros. took over the project after Cameron left, and Leonardo Dicaprio was cast in it.

Instead of the Unrealized Dicaprio project, they turned it into a ten-episode TV show on Apple TV starring Tom Holland in 2021. The four-part documentary Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan came out on Netflix in 2021. It was directed by Olivier Megaton.

What Happened to Billy Milligan?

On December 12, 2014, Billy Milligan died in Ohio of cancer. Billy Milligan, who was 22 at the time, was arrested in 1977 after he was accused of kidnapping, stealing, and sexually assaulting three women near the Ohio State campus. He was put in jail for his crimes, and public lawyers helped him through the legal process.

But when Milligan did a thorough mental evaluation, he found something shocking. He said that he hadn’t done any of the things listed above. Instead, he said that Ragen stole the money and Adalana added the sexual attack.

As the process went on, it showed that Milligan had at least eight more separate personalities. Billy Milligan was found not guilty by reason of insanity of all nine criminal charges against him on December 4, 1978. This was after all the evidence and psychiatric results were carefully looked at. This ruling said that Milligan’s actions were partly caused by the fact that he had multiple personalities. Because of this, he was not held legally responsible.

Doctors said that his disorder was caused by the abuse he got from his dad, Chalmer Milligan when he was young. Billy’s mind splits into 10 and then 24 different personalities that don’t know much about what the others are doing. Chalmer Milligan passed away in 1988 when he was 61 years old. He always denied what was being said about him.

In 2012, he was told he had cancer. He painted there for the rest of his life until he died of cancer in 2014.
