Joseph W. Walker, the man who found Poe unconscious on October 3, 1849, described him as being “in severe suffering, and… in need of rapid care.” After being carried there, he passed away at 5:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 7, 1849.
Poe was too disoriented to explain how he ended there in such a precarious state or why he was wearing someone else’s clothes. On the night of his death, he allegedly kept shouting the name “Reynolds,” though it’s not clear to whom he was referring.
