India began the Tokyo Olympics with a silver medal. Chanu Saikhom Mirabai won this medal for India in the 49kg women’s weightlifting category. Mirabai achieved a new Olympic record in her second clean and jerk attempt, lifting a total of 115 kg. This record, however, did not survive long, as China’s Hou Zhihui shattered it with a lift of 116 kg on the subsequent try.
We would like to remind you that prior to Chanu, Karnam Malleswari had won a bronze medal for India in weightlifting in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He heaved a total of 240 kilogrammes. Chanu heaved a total of 202 kilogrammes (87 kg 115 kg). Simultaneously, China’s Hou Zhihui, who won the gold, lifted a total of 210 kg (94 kg 116 kg). Aisha Windi Kentika of Indonesia won the bronze medal with a total lift of 194 kg (84 kg 110 kg).
She came in second place in the snatch round. China’s weightlifter took first place. By lifting 94 kg, he set a new Olympic record. Chanu, the world record holder in the clean and jerk, lifted 110kg and 115kg in his first two attempts. She was, however, unable to lift 117kg in her most recent effort. Notably, Chanu did not compete well at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Following this, he continued to improve his game. He won gold at the 2017 FIFA World Cup and the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
