The Empress Season 2 Release Date: Netflix Confirms the Return of the German Period Drama
The Empress Season 2 Release Date: The Empress, a period story, has been one of the most popular German original shows in the past few years. Netflix quickly picked up the new show for a second season after a few weeks of viewing. We will talk about everything you need to know about The Empress’s second season below.
The Empress is a German historical romantic drama series on Netflix. It was created by Katharina Eyssen and is based on the early life and love story of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
Bernd Lange, Janna Maria Nandzik, and Lena Stahl all worked together to write the show. The show is co-directed by Florian Cossen and Katrin Gebbe.
Elisabeth Wittlebach married Franz Joseph, the Emporer of Austria, when she is only sixteen years old. Elisabeth has to fight for her voice in court and become the leader of a struggling company. She is at odds with life in court and with her mother-in-law.
When Was the Empress Renewed for a Second Season?
Official Netflix Status: Renewed
A little more than six weeks after the show’s first airing, on November 9, 2022, Netflix revealed that The Empress would be back for a second season.
Katharina Eyssen, who runs the show, said in an Instagram post around the time of the renewal:
“I’m so thankful that our series touched so many people in Germany and around the world.” What a powerful story Elisabeth’s life is. It’s also about having the guts to be different and the hope for a better future. That’s what we need now. Because of this, we’re glad we can keep telling this story.
Netflix’s The Empress got off to a great start. Over 106 million hours of the show were watched in the first two weeks after it came out, and for at least a week, it was the most-watched non-English language show on Netflix.
The Empress Season 2 Release Date
Unfortunately, we will have to wait a long time for the second season to come out. We don’t think the second season of The Empress will come out until at least 2024.
The show’s filming began in the fall of 2023; Netflix DE confirmed that cameras were rolling as of September 27th:
Which Actors or Actresses Will Be Back?
People from the following casts are likely to return for the second season:
- Devrim Lingnau as Elisabeth von Wittelsbach
- Philip Froissant as Franz Joseph I of Austria
- Melika Foroutan as Princess Sophie of Bavaria,
- Johannes Nussbaum as Archduke Maximilian
- Elisa Schlott as Duchess Helene in Bavaria
What Might Happen in The Empress’s Second Season?
Empress Elisabeth had a very interesting life that we have only scratched the surface of. There are still many decades to discover. Eleanor is now pregnant with her first child, Archduchess Sophie of Austria. She will be the first of her four children to be born.
While the birth of her first child was one of the best times in Elisabeth’s life, it also caused a fight with her mother-in-law, Princess Sophie. Princess Sophie thought the Empress was too young to raise the children, so she took it upon herself to do so.
Even though it took her months of protesting, Elisabeth finally got her husband, Emporer Franz, to let her take her kids with her on her trips. Archduchess Sophie, her daughter, died of a high fever while she was traveling in Hungary.
Archduchess Sophie’s death made her grandmother, Princess Sophie, even more determined that she should raise the Emperor’s grandkids instead of the Empress’s. Elisabeth’s children who lived would all grow up with a mother who was far away and not very nice to them.
Can The Empress Become the Successor to The Crown?
After The Crown, which was a huge hit on Netflix, it will be hard for any other period show to follow suit. But there’s no doubt that The Empress can become the non-English language equal.
As there are many decades of Elisabeth’s life to look into, there may be many more seasons of The Empress to come.
