Mama, McMillan’s debut book, was released in 1987. Unhappy with her publisher’s meagre marketing efforts for Mama, McMillian promoted her own first book by reaching out to thousands of retailers, particularly those in African-American communities. The book quickly sold out of its initial first hardcover printing of 5,000 copies.
In 1992, McMillan’s third book, Waiting to Exhale, brought her to the attention of the country. The book spent several months on The New York Times bestseller list, and by 1995, more than three million copies had been sold. The same-named 1995 movie based on the book starred Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon and was directed by Forest Whitaker.
How Stella Got Her Groove Back, another one of McMillan’s books was made into a movie with Angela Bassett and Taye Diggs in 1998. The same-titled 2000 direct-to-cable film starring Wesley Snipes and Sanaa Lathan and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood was based on the McMillan novel Disappearing Acts.

Whoopi Goldberg starred in the Lifetime adaptation of McMillan’s A Day Late and a Dollar Short, which also starred Ving Rhames, Tichina Arnold, Mekhi Phifer, Anika Noni Rose, and Kimberly Elise. In addition, McMillan wrote the Waiting to Exhale sequel (2010), Getting to Happy, and The Interruption of Everything (2006).

In Terry McMillan’s love life, she was married to Jonathan Plummer, who was 24 years younger than she was. In 1995, the couple had their first romantic encounter at a resort in Jamaica.
