Roman Sana could not score in the Tokyo Olympics
The World Archery Championships started tomorrow in Yankton, USA. But the country’s best archer Roman Sana could not score well in the ranking round of this competition.
In the Recurve boys’ ranking round, he scored 638 and became the 47th out of 102 archers. Roman failed to score in the last Tokyo Olympics last July. At the Tokyo Olympics, Roman finished 72nd out of 64 with a score of 72.
Roman will also have to pay the price for scoring badly in the ranking round. He will have to play in the singles elimination round of the Recurve boys with a relatively tougher opponent than him. As such, Roman will face Federico Mussolini of Italy in the first round.
Ramakrishna Saha scored the best in Bangladesh. He became the 28th with a score of 742. In the first round, Ramakrishna will play against Luis Goncalves of Portugal. Hakim Ahmed Rubel became the 50th with a score of 633. Rubel’s opponent in the first round is Michael Howlek of the Czech Republic.
Tomorrow has been a big push in the girls recurve event. As Corona was positive, Siddiqui could not enter the field with the best archer of the girls. In this event, Beauty Roy scored 551 and became 72nd out of 69 people. Beauty will play against Slovakia’s Denisa Barankova.
Asim Kumar Das is the only player from Bangladesh to play in the compound event. He scored 64 and became 57th out of 6. Asim will play in the first round with Ramos Lopez of Spain.
Bangladesh’s mixed doubles team became quite weak due to Dia Corona’s attack. However, Siddiqui had earlier won silver in the Archery World Cup Stage Two in Switzerland with Roman Sana as his partner. He then qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and played in the finals. However, in the end, they lost to Karina Dominsky of Belarus by 6-5 set points in a nerve-wracking tiebreaker. This time Bangladesh will have to play in mixed doubles without Dia.
Roman scored 6 points in the last World Championships held in Sertokhobs, Netherlands. He won the bronze medal by defeating Mauro Nespoli of Italy 6-1. He brought the country the honor of participating in the Tokyo Olympics. Roman was ranked 47th in Tokyo with an average of 749.
Roman’s best score in the World Archery Federation’s recognition event is 71. In 2019, he made the Bank of Thailand in the Asian Cup (Leg-1).
Roman scored 6 in the recurve men’s singles qualification round on the way to a hat-trick of gold at the last SA Games in Kathmandu-Pokhara. This is his best score in all the competitions.
Dia Siddiqui could not take part in the recurve women’s singles selection. According to the Bangladesh Archery Federation, the archer, who won silver in the recurve mixed doubles with Roman at the Archery World Cup Stage II last May, has contracted the coronavirus.
