Richard Lewis Cause Of Death
Richard Lewis, a stand-up comic who worked with Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday night (February 27, 2024) of a heart attack.
He was 76 years old. Lewis quit doing stand-up comedy in April after being told he had Parkinson’s disease. He was most recently in Season 12 of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Lewis said he would have to miss Season 11 of “Curb” in 2021 because he needed to heal from three surgeries. “When I walked in and they applauded, I felt like a million bucks,” he told Variety about his return for one Season 11 show.
When we were done filming, Larry gave me a hug and told me he was happy.
In “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Lewis played a semi-fictionalized version of himself for 24 years. He was famous for his nervous, self-deprecating comedy.
Aside from his movie start in 1979’s “Diary of a Young Comic,” Lewis became well-known in the 1980s and 1990s by going on “The Tonight Show” and “Late Show With David Letterman.”
In 1985, his Showtime comedy show “I’m in Pain” made him look sad and animated for the first time. After that came the HBO shows “I’m Exhausted” (1988), “I’m Doomed” (1990), and “Richard Lewis: The Magical Misery Tour” (1997).
“Anything but Love,” an ABC show from 1989, starred Lewis and Jamie Lee Curtis as coworkers at a Chicago magazine who fall in love and stop working together.
Before ending in 1992, it ran for four seasons and 56 shows. Lewis was also in a number of shows in the 1990s, such as “Daddy Dearest” with Don Rickles and “Hiller and Diller” with Kevin Nealon.
Lewis was in “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” (1993), “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995), and “Hugo Pool” (1997). In “Drunks,” which starred Faye Dunaway, George Martin, Parker Posey, Howard Rollins, Spalding Gray, and Dianne Wiest, Lewis played a drug and drink addict who was having a hard time.
HBO said in a statement, “We are very sad to hear that Richard Lewis has died.” His comedic genius, wit, and skill could not be matched. Richard will always be loved by everyone at HBO and on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” We are very sorry for his family’s loss, as well as those of his friends and fans who knew Richard would always make them laugh.
Throughout his career, the comedian has been open about his drug and drink abuse, depression, and anxiety. Lewis, who used crystal meth and cocaine, said that the death of John Candy in 1994 made him want to stop using drugs.
After getting better and going back to “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in 2021, Lewis told Variety, “I’ve dedicated my life to comedy and my sobriety for the last almost 27 years.” I feel too much joy. Before today, I could only think about being happy for a minute at a time. Today, I’m breaking all my records.”
“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital, and for most of my life, he’s been like a brother to me,” David told HBO. He was one of a kind because he was both funny and nice. I’ll never forgive him for making me cry today.
