Political aspirations behind Meghan appearance on Ellen show?

Political observers have been pointing out that the appearance of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, on Ellen show Friday morning has once again indicated her willingness to enter the political scene. It was her first TV interview after her talk with Oprah Winfrey in March this year. Many believe that the appearance on Ellen show was in fact the launch of Meghan the Proto-Politician on the American people. She has campaigned for several issues, including for paid parental leave. Meghan told Ellen in the interview: “People truly forget that or don’t even know it’s one of only six wealthy countries in the world that does not mandate and have a federal paid leave program. I will do everything I can to make sure we can implement that for people.”

Plenty of reasons

There are some reasons why the experts believe that Meghan has political aspirations. She had a meeting with California Governor Gavin Newsom for one hour in February this year. Later she has been interviewed by The 19th, a woman-focused political site. Last year, Meghan also attended an event conducted by Michelle Obama’s nonpartisan organization When We All Vote. Besides, Meghan also interviewed the former First Lady when she guest-edited British Vogue in 2019. Last year, both Meghan and her husband Prince Harry appeared in a video for Time magazine. And their comments appeared to be endorsement of Joe Biden. In September, they held a series of meetings at places like the WHO and the UN. The topic of discussion included from climate action, women’s empowerment, youth engagement, mental health, Covid vaccine, etc. In October she wrote an open letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer on the issue of paid parental leave. “I’m not an elected official, and I’m not a politician. I’m writing to you at this deeply important time – as a mom – to advocate for paid leave,” she wrote.
