Otto Frederick Warmbier was an American college student who was born on December 12, 1994. He became well-known after he was jailed in North Korea in 2016. Warmbier went to North Korea as part of a group tour in December 2015. But on January 2, 2016, as he was getting ready to leave the country, he was arrested at Pyongyang International Airport.

Warmbier’s health situation wasn’t made public until June 2017, when it was said that botulism and a sleeping pill had put him into a coma. After 17 months in prison, he was set free, but he was still unconscious. He was sent back to the United States. On June 13, 2017, he landed in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was taken right away to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center so that he could be checked out and given care. Even though Warmbier was given medical care, he never woke up. Tragically, on June 19, 2017, his parents made the hard choice to ask for his feeding tube to be taken out. He died six days after he got back to the U.S.

The coroner’s report says that the exact cause of the injury that killed Warmbier and cut off air to his brain is still unknown. Internal scans of his head did not show any cracks or breaks.
