The 2024 premiere of Orion and the Dark, a new DreamWorks Animation feature film, will stream exclusively on Netflix. Here is the pertinent information.
This is the second DreamWorks Animation film to be released exclusively on Netflix; the first was Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans in 2021. Currently, Netflix in the United States carries all theatrical releases from DreamWorks within the first window.
The film has been in development at DreamWorks Animation for the past few years, with the book having been optioned by the acclaimed studio as early as 2015, during the mid-2010s. During the DreamWorks panel at the Annecy Film Festival, it was first announced and attached to Netflix.
What is the Narrative Behind Orion and the Dark?
The narrative is based on Emma Yarlett’s best-selling 40-page picture book Orion and the Dark, which was released in May 2014. Nibbles, Dragon Post, Poppy Pickle, and It’s Mine are also works by the author. Netflix has released an official synopsis for the upcoming animated feature film, which looks to be true to the novel on which it is based:
“Orion appears to be your typical elementary school kid – shy, unassuming, and harboring a secret crush.” Orion is a mass of teenage worry behind his supposedly normal appearance, fully preoccupied with absurd worries of bees, dogs, the ocean, cell phone waves, deadly gutter clowns, and even tumbling off a cliff.
But, of all his anxieties, the thing he is most scared of is what he faces every night: the dark. When the real embodiment of his darkest fear pays him a visit, Dark whisks Orion away on a roller coaster journey around the world to prove there is nothing to fear in the night.
As the unexpected couple becomes closer, Orion must decide if he can learn to accept the unknown – to stop allowing fear to dictate his life and ultimately embrace the joy of living.”
Is There Any Release Date for Orion and the Dark?
Netflix and DreamWorks Animation revealed in June 2023 that they had cooperated on the film, which was written by Charlie Kaufman, and unveiled many pieces at the annual Annecy International Animation Film Festival that same day. The voices of Jacob Tremblay, Paul Walter Hauser, and Werner Herzog have been announced. The film will be released on Netflix in 2024.

To date, two voice performers have been cast for the project’s two titular characters. Orion will be voiced by the Canadian actor Jacob Tremblay, who is best known for his roles in Wonder, Good Boys, Luca, and The Little Mermaid.
