Eiichiro Oda’s Eye Surgery Led One Piece Manga to a 1-Month Break!
Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece and a mangaka (manga artist), recently made an important statement. He will be out of work for four weeks from June 19 to July 10 to undergo astigmatism eye surgery.
This implies that for nearly a month, no new volumes of the One Piece manga will be released in the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The One Piece manga will be republished in the magazine’s 33rd issue, which will be issued on June 12.
Oda disclosed that his astigmatism is so severe that “everything appears blurry” and inhibits his ability to function. He also made a jest about seeing “a lot of twins these days” in his announcement, which was translated into English by a devoted One Piece fan.
Astigmatism is an eye condition characterized by the irregular curvature of the cornea, the front surface of the eye. This causes the light entering the eye to refract erratically, resulting in blurred or distorted vision. Astigmatism is characterized by symptoms such as impaired vision, eyestrain, migraines, and difficulty seeing fine details.
Oda has been discussing his health condition with his editors since 2022, and he has continuously received support and encouragement from his employees. He stated that he intends to return with a “new eyesight powerup” following the surgery.
As a humorous addition to his announcement, Oda included an illustration of Franky, a character from One Piece, firing laser beams from his irises.
Oda briefly revealed various health difficulties in an interview published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2022, in addition to astigmatism. To control his weight increase, he has had to take extra breaks at work and has even gone without eating for a few days. Oda, who is now 48 years old, began working on One Piece when he was 17, over three decades ago.
He is one of the most well-known manga artists of all time, with One Piece being his most well-known work. In December 2014, he was recognized by Guinness World Records for publishing the most copies of the same comic book series, selling 320 million copies. Eight years later, after releasing 500 million copies of the comic, he beat his own record in the same category.
