The song “Mama He’s Crazy” went to the top of the “Billboard” Hot Country Songs chart and won them their first Grammy. Their first record, “Why Not Me,” which came out in 1984, sold 2 million copies and was number one on the “Billboard” Top Country Albums chart. The title track of the album gave the pair their second #1 hit and their second Grammy.
The singles “Girls’ Night Out” and “Love Is Alive” were also #1 hits. The Judds’ second album, “Rockin’ with the Rhythm,” came out in 1985 and went platinum. It was number one on the Top Country Albums chart and had the number one hits “Have Mercy,” “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days),” “Rockin’ with the Rhythm of the Rain,” and “Cry Myself to Sleep.”
Their third album, “Heartland,” which came out in 1987, also went Platinum and hit #1 on the Top Country Albums chart. The singles “I Know Where I’m Going,” “Maybe Your Baby’s Got the Blues,” and “Turn It Loose” also all made #1.
The duo’s first album that didn’t hit #1 on the Top Country Albums chart was “Christmas Time with The Judds,” which came out in 1987. It was certified Platinum, but it only got as high as #49. After their holiday record, the Judds released “River of Time” in 1989, which went Gold and hit #2 on the Top Country Albums chart.
“Young Love (Strong Love)” and “Let Me Tell You About Love” were both number-one hits from the record. “Let Me Tell You About Love” was The Judds’ last #1 hit, but three songs from their last studio album, “Love Can Build a Bridge,” reached the top 10 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
“Born to Be Blue,” “One Hundred and Two,” and “Love Can Build a Bridge” all reached #5. Naomi’s discovery of Hepatitis C in 1991 put an end to The Judds, but they still sold more than 20 million albums and went on a successful farewell tour. That same year, Judd started the Naomi Judd Education and Research Fund. In 1999, the two got back together for a New Year’s Eve show in Phoenix, and in 2000, they did a tour called “Power to Change.”
Naomi was a judge on “Star Search” from 2003 to 2004, and she started presenting “Naomi’s New Morning” on the Hallmark Channel in 2005. In 2008, she was a judge and mentor on “Can You Duet,” a competition show on CMT.
