Budenholzer, a native of Holbrook, Arizona, attended Pomona College, where he participated in basketball and golf for four years and was designated the Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1993. After graduating from college, he spent the 1993–1994 season playing professionally in Denmark for Vejle Basketball Klub, where he averaged a team-high 27.5 points per game while also serving as the head coach of two teams in the club’s development system. Prior to this, he had a “cup of coffee” playing for Pentland in the Scottish League.
Budenholzer has joined the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach. Budenholzer was hired as a video coordinator by the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA) at the commencement of the 1994–1995 season.

Budenholzer and the Hawks agreed to part ways on April 25, 2018, after he was fired as president of basketball operations for the Hawks on May 5, 2017.
