Career
Shkreli received his internship training from the investment firm of Cramer, Berkowitz, and Company. While he was there, he made the recommendation to sell short the stock of a biotechnology firm called Regeneron. Regeneron was engaged in research on the development of a drug that assists with weight loss. Cramer was successful in generating profits as a result of Shkreli’s precise forecast that the price of Regeneron would decrease.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) took note of the situation as well and inquired as to how Shkreli was able to anticipate it; however, the SEC was unable to locate any proof that he had any insider knowledge or had participated in any illegal activity.
The SEC took note of the situation as well. After spending a total of four years working at Cramer Berkowitz, during which time he held the jobs of intern and associate, he ultimately decided to leave the firm in order to pursue a career as a financial analyst at two of the world’s most prominent investment banks.
Shkreli started his own hedge fund in 2006 and named it Elea Capital Management. The following year, Lehman Brothers brought legal action against Elea in a court based in the state of New York. The defendant, in this case, was Lehman Brothers.
According to the charges that have been given in the case, Shkreli placed a wager that was erroneous, and when the value of the stock that he had shorted soared, he was unable to pay back Lehman Brothers the money that he owed them. In October of 2007, the court decided that Shkreli owed the bank $2.3 million and handed down a judgment in his favor. Unfortunately, the bank went bankrupt before the company could truly start collecting on the verdict.

Legal Issues
Shkreli was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on December 18, 2015, after a federal indictment charging him with securities fraud had been brought against him the previous day, on December 17, 2015, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. During his time spent working at MSMB Capital Management and Retrophin, he was accused of running a scheme that bore striking similarities to the well-known Ponzi scheme.
Shkreli maintained that he was the target of law enforcement owing to the price increases he imposed for the medicine daraprim, and he claimed that this was the reason why he was being investigated. During the course of the legal proceeding that took place in 2017, Shkreli maintained his position that not a single one of his investors had sustained a monetary loss.
He had the audacity to say that his actions did not constitute illegal behavior because some people were actually able to make a profit from them, and he defended this reasoning with the fact that he said this. On the fourth of August in 2017, the trial jury found Shkreli guilty of three counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud. However, they found him not guilty on five of the remaining charges.
