Following the 2005 BJ’s Charity Classic on the Women’s Senior Golf Tour, Whitworth retired from competitive golf. Kathy Whitworth’s Little Book of Golf Wisdom was published in 2007 and co-written by her and Jay Golden.

She was residing in Flower Mound, Texas with her companion Bettye Odle at the time of her passing. On December 24, 2022, at the age of 83, she passed out during a neighbor’s Christmas celebration and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
