Early life

Earl Russell Madden (1905–1961) and Mary (née Flaherty) Madden gave birth to John Earl Madden on April 10, 1936, in Austin, Minnesota. When John was young, his father, an auto mechanic, moved the family to Daly City, California, which is south of San Francisco.

John went to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic parochial school with John Robinson. He graduated in 1950. After that, he went to Jefferson High School and graduated in 1954.

Playing career

Madden was a football star in high school. In 1954, he played for one season at the College of San Mateo before getting a football scholarship to the University of Oregon, where he studied pre-law and played football with his childhood friend John Robinson. He was put on the bench because he hurt his knee and had to have surgery on it.

Then, in 1955, he went to College of San Mateo, where he played football. In the fall of 1956, he went to Grays Harbor College and played football there. In the fall of 1956, he transferred to Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, where he played both offence and defence for the Mustangs in 1957 and 1958 while getting a Bachelor of Science in education in 1959 and then a Master of Arts in education in 1961.

The injury ended the season, even though there were still four games left.

But on January 3, 1959, Madden played in the All-American Bowl in Tucson, Arizona. Lou Pavlovich of The Sporting News later praised Madden for his performance in the game.

Then, though, he hurt his other knee during a scrimmage with the Eagles during his first training camp in August 1959. This ended his playing career before he had a chance to play in a real professional game.

Madden recounted how he became involved with coaching: “I hurt my knee during my first year with the Philadelphia Eagles, so I couldn’t play. While I was getting better, Norm Van Brocklin would show me movies and tell me what was going on. I got a degree in teaching, which was a good fit for me because I love football.”

In 1960, he became an assistant coach at Santa Maria, California’s Allan Hancock College. In 1962, he became the head coach. In two seasons, Madden led the Bulldogs to a 12-6 record, including an 8-1 record in 1963, when they were ranked as the No. 9 city college in the country.

After the 1963 season, San Diego State hired him as a defensive assistant coach, a job he held until 1966. During that last campaign, the 1966 Aztecs were ranked as one of the best small colleges in the country. Madden was a coach at San Diego State under Don Coryell.
