Jo Dee Messina and Cole Swindell Surprise ‘Heads Carolina’ Mashup at 2022 CMA Awards
The song “She Had Me at Heads Carolina” by Cole Swindell has received the mark of approval from Jo Dee Messina!
Swindell and Messina collaborated on a brand-new remix of Swindell’s hit single “She Had Me at Heads Carolina,” which made its surprise live debut at the 2022 Country Music Association Awards on Wednesday. The new remix heavily references Messina’s 1996 debut single “Heads Carolina, Tails California.”
Swindell, who is 39 years old, began the performance on his own alongside a band while wearing a grey fringe jacket as he sung the song. The song had been published earlier this year and has since charted at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the musician’s highest entry to date on the chart.
Two days after they published a remix that mashes together both songs, Messina, who is 52 years old, then joined him onstage to play an explosive verse and chorus of “Heads Carolina, Tails California” alongside him.
“Did any of you actually believe that we were going to leave you in suspense by not releasing a version of this song featuring @jodeemessina?! This here 90’s country lover is having such a moment where everything comes full circle, “Swindell expressed his excitement about the release of the remix in an Instagram post on Monday. “The ‘She Had Me at Heads Carolina’ Remix is OUT NOW!” is what you should say.
The solo version of “She Had Me at Heads Carolina” was included on Swindell’s fourth studio album Stereotype, which was released in April. Since then, the song has climbed to the top of the Billboard Country Airplay chart and has been awarded the RIAA’s gold certification.
The song “Heads Carolina, Tails California” by Messina was the first single to be released from the musician’s debut album, which was simply titled Messina in 1996. After reaching that position, the song went on to reach No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and was awarded platinum certification by the RIAA.
At the 2022 Country Music Association Awards, Swindell was nominated for two awards: musical event of the year and music video of the year, both for his duet with Lainey Wilson entitled “Never Say Never.”
Wednesday night at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville is when the 2022 CMA Awards will be broadcast live on television.
